A Scenic Dog Walk at Lowther Castle

If you're looking for a relaxed walk through history and nature, the Lowther Castle loop is a perfect choice. With castle views, riverside paths, and plenty of space to roam, it's a favourite with local dog owners and visitors alike.

Woodland Trails and Castle Views

The adventure begins at the complimentary car park next to the stunning castle. From there, the route takes you on the gravel track down into the woodland towards Askham village.

It's a great walk for dogs to explore off-leash, but please be aware that there's livestock on the ground.

Riverside Stretch Along the Lowther

Halfway through the loop, the trail runs alongside the River Lowther. It’s peaceful and picturesque, with the occasional heron hunting on the river.

You’ll pass an old stone bridge and historic buildings that give the area its timeless charm. There are plenty of spots to stop and let the dogs have a paddle.

Back Towards the Castle

The return leg heads back towards the castle across open parkland. It’s a lovely finish, with the grand castle framed at the end of the gravel track.

Once finished, consider heading over to the nearby Punchbowl Inn in Askham for a drink and a bite to eat. It’s dog-friendly inside and out and serves one of our favourite Sunday roasts.
