The Beacon walk is one of Penrith's most iconic dog walking routes, offering spectacular views across the Eden Valley and the Lake District fells.

This historic hill was once used as a signal station, with beacons lit to warn of approaching danger. Today, it's a peaceful nature reserve and perfect place for a refreshing walk with your four-legged friend.

The walk begins on Beacon Edge and follows well-marked paths through woodland, ascending to the summit where the Beacon Pike monument stands. From here, you'll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views in all directions.

Route Instructions

Step 1: Park up and head to the entrance
Parking on the side of the road at the top of Fell Lane tends to be easier than getting a spot on Beacon Edge

Step 2: Head through the gate and up the hill on the gravel path

Step 3: Go left at the fork and follow the main path up the hill for a few hundred meters

Step 4: You will come to a fork in the path. Go right and continue up the hill

Step 5: Once you reach the top of the hill, swing right at the fork
Optionally, you can take a detour to the left and you'll reach the Beacon monument around 50 meters down the path.

Step 6: Stay on the main trail for half a mile
There are some more fallen trees blocking the path, but you can stroll around them with no trouble.

Step 7: Take a sharp left at the next fork and follow the path for a mile

Step 8: When you come to the next fork, take the right path and stroll down the hill

Step 9: Once you reach the bottom of the hill, head left at the fork

Step 10: Fallen trees are blocking the main path, so follow the arrow to navigate round them

This is the end of the loop, so head back to the start

A traditional, dog-friendly pub located just outside Penrith, the Cross Keys is a charming pub and the perfect stop after exploring The Beacon or the picturesque Cold Springs Nature Reserve.
