Penrith to Tirril

Walk Summary

Great views Lake District village
The Penrith to Tirril walk offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the countryside that connects the historic market town of Penrith with the charming village of Tirril. This linear route takes you through a changing landscape of town edges, open fields, quiet lanes, and woodland copses. The walk begins at the western edge of Penrith and quickly transitions from urban to rural as you follow well-established footpaths across agricultural land. Magnificent views of the Lake District fells appear to the west as you climb gently onto higher ground. The middle section of the walk passes through peaceful farmland where you'll cross stiles and navigate field boundaries. As you approach Tirril, the route takes you through a small area of woodland before emerging into this picture-perfect Cumbrian village with its traditional stone cottages and friendly local pub. The Queen's Head Inn makes a perfect refreshment stop before either returning along the same route or catching the local bus back to Penrith. This walk is particularly beautiful in the morning or early evening when the low sunlight illuminates the landscape and the distant fells. The varied terrain makes it interesting for dogs, though they will need to be kept on leads for much of the route due to livestock in the fields.
