River Eamont
Walk Summary
This circular walk follows the River Eamont as it winds through open fields. A perfect spot for dogs to paddle and explore.
Around the halfway mark, the route passes the striking ruins of Brougham Castle, steeped in centuries of history and an ideal photo stop. From there, a quiet country road leads to Brougham Hall, a medieval fortified courtyard with picnic tables and a welcoming, dog-friendly café serving excellent coffee and cake.
The final stretch takes you over Eamont Bridge and finishes just outside the Beehive Pub, making this a relaxed and rewarding outing with plenty of places to pause and soak up the charm of the area.

Free parking is available in a layby at the start of the walk
Route Instructions
Step 1: Once you’ve parked up, head towards the Beehive Pub
Step 2: Continue along the path past the Beehive Pub until you reach the bridge
Step 3: Use the footbridge to cross the River Eamont
Step 4: Turn right at the end of the footbridge and head down the side road
Step 5: Continue along the path
Step 6: Go over the stile and follow the path through the forest
Step 7: Once you reach a fork in the path, go right
Step 8: Cross another stile to exit the forest, then follow the path alongside the river
If there is no livestock in the fields, now’s the time to let your dog go for a dip
Step 9: At the end of the field, cross the small bridge
Step 10: Follow the dirt path alongside the River Eamont for about a mile
Step 11: Continue along the path until you reach a kissing gate
Step 12: Turn right after the kissing gate and head up the hill
Keep dogs on leads from this point

Step 13: Go right at the top of the hill
When you reach the junction at the top of the hill, go right and follow the road until you reach the Bridge
Step 14: Head over the bridge
Brougham Castle will be on your right
Step 15: Stay right at the fork in the road
Step 16: Go right at the crossroads and walk down the road for half a mile
Step 17: After half a mile, take a right at the junction
Step 18: Follow the road round the left bend and head straight up the hill
Step 19: Once you reach Brougham Hall at the top of the hill, follow the road down to the right
Why not stop for a coffee and a peice of homemade cake in the medieval courtyard of Brougham Hall
Step 20: At the bottom of the hill, go straight towards the junction
Step 21: Go right at the junction, head over the bridge and you've made it!
If you fancy a drink in the sun, the Beehive has a lovely beer garden.
